Oak Hill Plantation site research sparks national interest
Category : Field Documented Buildings
UMW students, archaeologists, and local historians spent a weekend documenting the Oak Hill Plantation site in southwestern Pittsylvania County. Photos, measurements, and documentation are all crucial before these structures crumble. We are thrilled to announce that a newspaper article got written about the project and it can be read here.
Since the article has been written, an organization called the Greenfield Preston Plantation in Daleville, VA has reached out to Dr. Sanford and Dr. Pogue regarding the slave quarters that are being removed from the property without proper documentation. “The Kitchen is the Heart of the Home: Why the Greenfield Slave Cabins Matter” is an interesting read detailing the history of these particular slave dwellings. Sadly, locals are having to protest their removal. For more information or to see how you can help, please go to their Facebook page.
